The Lunatic Cafe by Laurell K. Hamilton

This is the fourth book in the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series. Considering I read the previous three books in a day each, it’s not surprising I continued with the series.

The Laughing Corpse by Laurell K. Hamilton

Published: 1994

Genre: urban fantasy

Length: 293 pages

Setting: St. Louis, present day

Interest: It’s the second book in the Anita Blake:Vampire Hunter series, following Guilty Pleasures.

Summary: Anita Blake is asked by Harold Gaynor to raise a very old zombie ancestor. She refuses (the ancestor is so old it would require a human sacrifice to do), but he isn’t one to take “no” for an answer. At the same time, the police bring Anita in to solve a rogue zombie problem. While she’s busy dealing with zombie problems, Jean Claude continues his attempts to make Anita his human servant and she continues to resist. Anita learns more about the strength of her powers, as she accidentally raises an entire cemetery after killing two bad guys.

Final thoughts: These books are a guilty pleasure for me. Once I start reading the book, I can’t stop. It’s still early in the series, so you don’t see all the sex that shows up later in the series. There’s some hints of it, since Jean Claude’s powers are sexually oriented, but no graphic details.

Reading challenges fulfilled: none since this is a review of a book from a previous year
