Here’s the Deal by Micah Edwards

This is Edwards’ second book. I highly enjoyed his first, Okay, So Look, and was thrilled to see he was continuing his retelling of the Bible with Exodus. I received a free copy of the book to review, but all of my opinions are my own.

Subtitle: A Humorous Retelling of the Book of Exodus (Bible: Faster, Funnier)

Published: 2018 (it comes out officially tomorrow)

Genre: religion novella

Length: 136 pages

Setting: Egypt and its surrounding areas, during the time of the Pharaohs

Summary: Short version: just look at the subtitle

Long version: The author goes through each section of the book of Exodus and discusses the important parts in a humorous manner. The chapters can be anything from a few verses to a few chapters long, depending on what happens. You get everything from the plagues while the Israelites are in Egypt, to escaping from the Pharaoh to wandering in the desert to the Ten Commandments. Edwards is also sure to point out every time we get a verse or instructions that have been recorded previously.

Final thoughts: Just as amusing as his retelling of Genesis. Again, I chuckled pretty much every chapter over something, and often had to read bits to whichever family member was nearby. It’s a quick read (even faster than reading the actual book of the Bible since it leaves out all the boring parts, like the instructions for building the Temple).  Edwards is definitely writing this retelling with love for the original book of Exodus. His jokes are never malicious, although they often poke fun at the ridiculous aspects of the story, of which there are many. I’ll probably have my kids read these books so they’re aware of the stories that underpin much of American society. The humor will encourage them to actually finish the stories, since they don’t have the religious guilt to do it otherwise.

Highly recommended. And, if you enjoy this one, you should pick up his retelling of Genesis as well!

Title comes from: In the book of Exodus, God sets up the rules that his people need to live by and he will bless them. It comes off as a salesman describing the great deal you’re getting.
