Wolfy Things by Erin Roberts

This is the next short story in the Event Horizon 2017 collection of short stories highlighting authors who are eligible for the 2017 Campbell award for best new writer.

Published: August, 2016 in Podcastle

Genre: shapeshifter fantasy

Setting: down South, present day

Summary: Nicky has always been teased by the other kids for the sunshine in his eyes. He’s also visited every year on his birthday by a wolf that speaks to him. He doesn’t understand why his mother is so sad, but he’s sure if he kills the wolf, everything will be better.

Final thoughts: I love that podcasts now count as an official publication to be considered for awards like the Campbell. Podcastle is the fantasy sister to EscapePod, and those are the two short story podcasts I listen to. So, I heard this one when it was originally cast, and I wasn’t too impressed by it. The boy is trying to impress his friends and make everything better, so he kills the wolf? That’s not a good solution.

Title comes from: Nicky has wolfy eyes, although he doesn’t want to admit it.
