Setting: Hollywood, 1990s
Interest: The title started with a “V” which is one of the letters I still need for my Alphabet Challenge
Summary: Lucky Santangelo has taken charge of Panther Studios and has started to turn it around. The next movie she’s going to make is “Gangsters,” with the notoriously chauvinistic and sexy Alex Woods as the director. Unfortunately, Lucky has made a mortal enemy – Donna Landsman. Lucky killed Donna’s husband and Donna still thinks like the Sicilian she was. Donna decides to ruin Lucky – taking control of Panther Studios, shooting her father, taking dirty pictures of her step-daughter, and staging her husband’s death (but actually kidnapping him and hiding him in Sicily in some caves). Once Lucky realizes what’s happening, she fights back ruthlessly, all the while pushing back against the attraction she feels for Alex.
Final thoughts: While I enjoyed the plot of Lucky and Donna trying to get revenge, I found the book contained too much raunchy sex for my liking. Several actors and actresses seemed to be introduced solely to add sex scenes, including the side plot with Lucky’s step-daughter becoming a model.
This is not the first Lucky Santangelo book, but Collins provides lots of background information on each character as they’re introduced, so I never felt lost. She’s definitely into strong female characters who swear and have casual sex just like one of the guys. While I appreciated the strong female characters and the gender parity in activities, this story was not for me. I doubted Alex’s transformation from male chauvinist pig to someone Lucky would seriously consider a relationship with, and the conclusion to the vendetta was a bit too pat. Guess I don’t need to read any more Jackie Collins novels.
