I skipped a weekly review because we were on vacation. As a bonus, our vacation house was stocked with the full set of Captain Underpants books, which they proceeded to devour, one after the other. Not exactly deep reading, but it worked great on vacation.
We had another American History Club meeting this week, our second about the Civil War. Mr. Curiosity and I had to read Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt in three days. It was a bit of a push, but we made it in time. I enjoyed the book. I thought it did a great job of showing the hardship of war, without highlighting the more brutal aspects, by staying with Jethro while his brothers went off to war. You saw the change in Jethro from the excitement that war would start soon to the horror that it keeps going. Miss Adventure read more of the American Girl series started with Meet Addy.
To get some details on the war, I also got some nonfiction overview books from the library. Mr. Curiosity was paging through The Civil War Chronicle. It has lots of images from the time period and a timeline running along the bottom of the pages. Mr. Curiosity has been enjoying flipping through the book. It’s definitely one you could sample bits of here and there.
We’re definitely winding down our school year, but there’s one more History Club meeting left where the kids get to choose their topics. We’ll see what they come up with this time!
