Earthweb by Marc Steigler

Published: 1998

Genre: science fiction

Length: 320 pages

Setting: far future Earth

Interest: I was looking for a book to read on my Kindle and I chose this one solely based on the title and the length.

Summary: The Shivas are giant extra-solar spaceships that show up every five years with a mission to destroy the Earth, and every five years a team of Angels is put together to take out the Shivas. It gets harder and harder to take out the Shiva because they adapt to the methods used to take out the previous wave. We follow a team of Angels as they are brought together and attack a Shiva. We are also introduced to a group of characters who help provide information and predictions as part of the web network watching and betting on what the Angels encounter and overcome on the Shiva. Eventually the ship is destroyed and the lead Angel actually makes it back out.

Final thoughts: An excellent story. The characters were nicely fleshed out and unique, and the action got quite intense at the end. I also really liked how the Internet worked with verification from both sides of a transaction (selling and buying) and a form of online betting that allowed the hive mind to come up with the best solution. It reminded me a bit of Ender’s Game (although the characters were adults) and “The Last Starfighter.”

Title comes from: I’m guessing it referred to the Internet web that everyone was hooked into.
